Trends and Targets for 16/07/2018

THE FTSE THIS WEEK (FTSE:UKX) Yes again we were sharply reminded of the “holiday” element in trading as values through London slumped 16% against the previous day, yet the FTSE celebrated with an interesting upward day on Friday. However… despite our initial target being exceeded by 12 points, the visuals give us some concerns.

Essentially, our question is simple. Has the market managed to trap itself in a region between 7,500 and 7,700 for the holiday season?

Dance steps during July (so far) lend credence to such a notion there there’s very little doubt growth now bettering 7717 points should make a valiant effort to reach 7806 points with secondary, if bettered, at 7906 points. Aside from the strange coincidence of numbers, an ambition at 7900 very neatly will match the heights of May and doubtless provoke the “double top” believers to throw their hands up in glee as some reversal should follow.

Or will it?

We’re genuinely uncertain what’s coming. A glance at the chart – and in particular the RED uptrend – shows a fragile market, one which only requires some negative news to provoke trouble. In the case of the FTSE, we would expect anything now below 7575 to drive the index back to an initial 7360 points. If broken, our secondary calculation lurks down at 7100 points.

Please remember, all prices are mid-price (halfway between the Buy and Sell). When we refer to a price CLOSING above a specific level, we are viewing the point where we can regard a trend as changing. Otherwise, we are simply speculating on near term trading targets. Our website is www.trendsandtargets.com.

UPDATE. We often give an initial and a secondary price. If the initial is exceeded, we still expect it to fall back but the next time the initial is bettered, the price should continue to the secondary. The converse it true with price drops.
