While voters in the USA, rather fittingly, organised a circular assassination squad with the results of their latest elections, the UK’s Bank of England decided the best way of tackling a “Cost of Living Crisis” was to ensure prices kept going up, bravely challenging rising prices by increasing Interest Rates. At some point, the current UK Prime Minister will doubtless punish all those involved by awarding peerages and titles, an easier proposition rather than risking any pause to question a failed economic model. After all, as an ex-town councillor in Manchester until assuming the top job, our Prime Minister was exquisitely qualified in wheelie bin collection times or choosing 20mph limit areas.
While across on the mainland, it was amusing to discover myself on a road which was 30mph on one side and just 20mph on the other. Perhaps they ran out of paint but the situation has remained for a couple of months! There’s no school involved, no particular parking situation, just the Eastbound side decorated with a plethora of 20mph signs and the road surface equally emblazoned. And the Westbound side has a 30mph sign, along with the usual miniature repeaters every now and then. It makes absolutely no sense, so perhaps the local Scottish councillors shall not prove to be Prime Ministerial material.
The first volley of shots from the USA appeared to impact the markets, the S&P down 4.36% and Wall Street down 3.44%. It was not a great day, the markets perhaps wondering if they’re about to retreat into the malaise of the President Biden years. From a relatively near term viewpoint, the Dow Jones apparently only needs weakness below 51,480 points to trigger reversal down to an initial 50,701 points with our secondary, if broken, a less visually likely 49,704 points. If triggered, the index needs exceed 51,905 to cancel the reversal potentials.

As for the UK FTSE, ending Thursday “only” down 0.43%, despite the damage from the Bank of England,, it feels like more trouble may be ahead. We strongly anticipate the FTSE opening substantially down on Friday, roughly 100 points below Thursdays closing price of 10,782 points. Our rather worrying calculations currently produce some dodgy sounding numbers.
Our Negative FTSE Scenario
If the FTSE 100 manages to open Friday below 10,688 points, serious trouble may be ahead as a cycle down to an initial 10,572 calculates as possible. Our longer term secondary (or later in the day) works out at 10,449 points, firmly placing the UK index in a zone where an ultimate bottom of 9,932 seems to be attractive. If triggered, the tightest stop looks like 10,770 points. Obviously, quite a lot will depend on the chaos emanating from the USA but from the feel of things, the UK market feels destined to seek inspiration from America.
Our Positive FTSE Scenario
Our calculations to identify any “its all been a dreadful mistake” movements currently demand above 10,830 points should trigger pathetic growth to an initial 10,857 points. Our secondary, if exceeded, adds up to a slightly more useful 10,888 points. To be sensible, only if the FTSE clambers above 10,888 points shall we actually believe the reversal cycle may be erased and the visuals suggest this unlikely.
Our Weekend Scenario
The weather looks dry, so the little tractor will be in action mulching impressive numbers of leaves. It addition, the big chainsaw is going to enjoy itself, removing a few bushes which spent 2026 growing out of control. And there are two Pampas Grass which shall be incinerated, always a spectacular job. Hopefully the Brazilian Grand Prix brings some entertainment but viewing a YouTube short video from Jeremy Clarkson encapsulated our reduced interest in races. Formula1 has become an exercise in what happens when Health & Safety hits motorsports, drivers actually now being penalised for actually racing hard. When Jackie Stewart launched his campaign to reduce the number of deaths, it’s pretty certain he never envisaged the current placid spectacle of what passes for racing, even though the cars are effectively given a “maximum” speed limit.
Have a good weekend.

SUCCESS above means both FAST & SLOW targets were met. ‘CESS means just the FAST target met and probably the next time it is exceeded, movement to the SLOW target shall commence.

Please remember, all prices are mid-price (halfway between the Buy and Sell). When we refer to a price CLOSING above a specific level, we are viewing the point where we can regard a trend as changing. Otherwise, we are simply speculating on near term trading targets. Our website is www.trendsandtargets.com.
UPDATE. We often give an initial and a secondary price. If the initial is exceeded, we still expect it to fall back but the next time the initial is bettered, the price should continue to the secondary. The converse it true with price drops.
