Weight Gain drug; PureTech Health Plc (LSE:PRTC)  trading around 120.60 at time of writing.

PureTech represent a fairly apt focus for discussion, following a flurry of visits to our local GP’s in-house vampire, a lovely lady called Fiona who regards it as her life work to extract blood from the innocent. To be honest, Fiona is a superb practice nurse (who sometimes reads my daily articles!) and can wield a needle with greater delicacy than the nurses across at the Haematology Unit. From the glint in their eyes, patients are left with the feeling they’d rather be holding a chainsaw. But Fiona is capable of filling 5 test tubes of blood, while the patient still has eyes tightly shut, expecting an imminent stab.

The problem, as happens for folk of a certain age and weight, is Type 2 Diabetes. First diagnosed a few years ago, my bloodwork had retreated to sane levels and I’d been able to stop the dreadful Diabetes medication. If offered Metformin by a GP, run, screaming. It can have terrible effects on patients toilet regimes and is probably sponsored by an underwear manufacturer. Of course, some folk have no side effects! But with the end of 30 months of chemotherapy, Fiona The Nurse was itching to stab me, demanding another look at my Type2 Diabetes bloodwork as, in her biased opinion, I’d put on weight. Quite how she spotted a 7 kilo gain defeats but apparently my body had returned to its “a wee fat bloke” default setting, boasting 101 kilos on her scales.

After talking things over with my wife, Nurse Fiona was informed  the risks of Type 2 Diabetes were preferable to taking Metformin, probably the first time a prescribed drug was being refused. She arranged a meeting with the practice Pharmacist, someone I didn’t know existed. The guy listened to my Metformin anecdotes, discretely going into the loo with a full change of clothes and a black bin-bag, running into the bushes at a nature reserve, desperate to avoid eye contact with a bunch of children on mountain bikes navigating the usually deserted track, and of course, that time the “dog car” was changed for something with leather seats. This particular drug became a “quality of life” issue, along with the source of my funny stories about a fictional dog walking friend.

The Pharmacist was sympathetic, saying he’d heard about this sort of thing and pointing out I should have complained to the doctor. Maybe it’s a man thing but admitting you couldn’t risk going out in public wasn’t a welcome conversation, no matter what else was happening. After all, one has a certain self image to maintain. along with a mental voice from “Steve Wrights Old Woman” saying “mustn’t cause a fuss”…

And thus, a new drug called Ozempic was prescribed. It’s apparently also a popular weight loss drug, self administered weekly. It ticked all the boxes until Monday 7th September, when the prescription had been collected and there was the discovery I was expected to inject the stuff myself, into myself. While the needle is tiny, the process generated a bit of a scream, my wife inspecting the syringe thing and announced I’d missed, absolutely nothing had entered my body. She got that “I wish this was a chainsaw” glint in her eyes, before stabbing me. In what was a painless process. She has agreed to stab me weekly, though promises not to enjoy it.

And this brings us to PureTech Health, a company claiming to have an orally administered weight loss solution which will – from a personal perspective – successfully compete with Ozempic, though it appears the magic from PureTech isn’t intended for diabetes, just for fat people! In our book, any initiative which does not involve injections deserves extremely positive attention.

PureTech boast a share price which has been waffling around since breaking the Closing Price Downtrend Since 2021, the share price carefully respecting this historical downtrend and giving building hope for the future. Perhaps their Half Year price announcement on 22nd September is supposed to do to the share price something similar to my imaginary Ozempic needle, causing a sharp surge upward?

If we’re right – and we expect to be – above just 129 should bring a sharp surge to an initial 133p with our secondary, if bettered, at a comfortable 140.5p. This secondary target level is liable to prove important, launching the share price into a zone where a long term third level ambition of 162p makes some sense. Visually, this is our expectation.

Should things decide to go wrong, below 113 should apparently trigger reversals to an initial 109p with our secondary, if broken, at 102p. And perhaps a solid bounce. Hopefully our Type 2 Diabetes regime doesn’t discover such an issue as a break below 93 kilos will be quite welcome. Hopefully this does something to the diabetes blood results but stopping being a “wee far bloke” will be a real reward.

SUCCESS above means both FAST & SLOW targets were met. ‘CESS means just the FAST target met and probably the next time it is exceeded, movement to the SLOW target shall commence.

Please remember, all prices are mid-price (halfway between the Buy and Sell). When we refer to a price CLOSING above a specific level, we are viewing the point where we can regard a trend as changing. Otherwise, we are simply speculating on near term trading targets. Our website is www.trendsandtargets.com.

UPDATE. We often give an initial and a secondary price. If the initial is exceeded, we still expect it to fall back but the next time the initial is bettered, the price should continue to the secondary. The converse it true with price drops.
