Flight of Fancy with International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (LSE:IAG)

It’s time to give away a trade secret! While there are absolutely NO safe indicators for positive movement on a share price, there are a couple which are well worth paying a lot of attention to. At present, IAG are producing one of our favourites, something we call a Horizontal Trend or Glass Ceiling. This tends be a pretty straightforward convergence of numbers, the sanest attitude being to await price closure (in the case of IAG) above the highest closing point of this Green line. In the case of IAG, this is bettering a closing price of 446p providing a very likely fuse for future fireworks. We’ve painted a Green Line at the 450p level but reality demands closure above 446 or intraday above the prior high.

Alternatively, exceeding the Highest High of intraday trading prices should offer another type of signal for a “safe” trade and in the case of IAG, this looks like the high of July 27th at 455p. Obviously, this risks eating into any trade profitability but with both the Closing Price argument, along with the High of Day argument giving an initial target level of 488p, there are certainly a reasonable number of points awaiting collected by the observant and slightly brave trader.

We often bang on about a Trend Break rarely being any solid indication of gains or losses. Over the years, this has tended be the only exception to such a rule, so we tend pay attention to Horizontal Trends. It’s also worth remembering, when they happen with the opposite of the chart extract below, a series of bottoms which conspire to exhibit a Glass Floor, a future break tends be quite vivid and fast, in a downward direction. However, the balance of probabilities suggests IAG is perhaps concealing some upward ambitions.

To deal with the current negative prospects, below 394p threatens reversal down to an initial 363p with our secondary, if broken, calculating at a potential bottom of 320p. If triggered, the tightest stop looks like 414p.

Conversely, above 414p looks interesting, hopefully capable of triggering movement to an initial 447p with our secondary, if bettered, working out at a future 488p, dumping the share price into the zone made possible by our Horizontal Trend. This gives a sensible future secondary ambition at a comfortable 548p.

Unlike their customer satisfaction results, IAG’s share price should be worth paying attention to.

SUCCESS above means both FAST & SLOW targets were met. ‘CESS means just the FAST target met and probably the next time it is exceeded, movement to the SLOW target shall commence.

Our commentary is in two sections. Immediately below are today’s updated comments. If our commentary remains valid, the share can be found in the bottom section which has a RED heading. Hopefully, this will mean you no longer need to flip back through previous reports. HYPERLINKS DISABLED IN THIS VERSION

Please remember, all prices are mid-price (halfway between the Buy and Sell). When we refer to a price CLOSING above a specific level, we are viewing the point where we can regard a trend as changing. Otherwise, we are simply speculating on near term trading targets. Our website is www.trendsandtargets.com.

UPDATE. We often give an initial and a secondary price. If the initial is exceeded, we still expect it to fall back but the next time the initial is bettered, the price should continue to the secondary. The converse it true with price drops.
