Getting interesting, Close Brothers Group Plc (LSE:CBG)

Back in the day... a favourite bit of software was a spreadsheet package called SuperCalc. Microsoft Excel still hadn’t been assembled yet, a product which successfully cherry picked the best bits of existing main players in the spreadsheet game (Lotus123 & Supercalc) and integrated “easily” with other Microsoft products. Almost overnight, Supercalc & Lotus seemed to vanish

From a personal perspective, this was my first entry into the Car Finance game as I was asked to produce something to replace the horrid Ready Reckoner little books for car finance, utterly hated by everyone who worked in our company car showrooms. A rookie mistake was to spend a few minutes working out the correct monthly payment for a deal, only for the customer to ask “how much will it be a month, if I pay an extra £500? Customers only really wanted the monthly payment. Producing a spreadsheet with some embedded macro’s turned the finance calculation into the work of seconds and it was quickly reported back that clients tended not to question whatever figures were produced from the Apricot PC used in the car showroom.

When everything hit the fan over the victimless “crime” Close Brothers, and other financiers were involved in, I paid a bit of attention to the story though I’d been away from the car game for over 30 years. Introducing computers to business, along with some success with software, ensured a different path was taken away from my families motor trade business’s.

It was certainly a surprise seeing Close Brothers surge by 15% on news of continued loss, along with a new figure to settle claims relating to the Motor Finance Consumer Redress Scheme.

An interesting situation exists for the share price, the share value solidly exceeding the downtrend since 2021 and suggesting a new game may be afoot. As a result, above 446p looks capable of triggering further gains to an initial 470p and visually, some potential hesitation.  Our longer term secondary works out at 501p which should expose the share to an attraction from a future 554p, along with plenty of visuals which demand a stall in gains as it will match a bunch of highs since 2024. Should such a level be achieved, we shall need stare hard into our tea leaves again to present a reasonable scenario for the more distant future.

Our alternate scenario, if the current situation turns out to be a trap, suggests below 375p could trigger reversal to an initial 339p with our secondary, if broken, at a probable bottom at 280p.

Fingers crossed but we suspect Close Brothers are going to head upward.

SUCCESS above means both FAST & SLOW targets were met. ‘CESS means just the FAST target met and probably the next time it is exceeded, movement to the SLOW target shall commence.

Please remember, all prices are mid-price (halfway between the Buy and Sell). When we refer to a price CLOSING above a specific level, we are viewing the point where we can regard a trend as changing. Otherwise, we are simply speculating on near term trading targets. Our website is www.trendsandtargets.com.

UPDATE. We often give an initial and a secondary price. If the initial is exceeded, we still expect it to fall back but the next time the initial is bettered, the price should continue to the secondary. The converse it true with price drops.
