Back in the 1980’s and able to fall for my family’s child labour tricks, being allocated a Volvo 264 Estate car, along with the first type of mobile phone, ensured I was ready at any time to offload a tanker of fuel, rush to a cash and carry for petrol station stocks (in the 1980’s, we were still finding out what would sell), or drive to any airport to pick up family members who flew everywhere.

But I’d the magical something none of the rest of them had, a telephone in my Volvo. Of course, being an utter idiot, the penny hadn’t dropped that I was on call 24 hours a day, the car phone backed up with a pager. But the car phone was great, you lifted the handset, pressed a green button, and a wonderful operator would connect with wherever I wanted. As mentioned earlier, the penny had not dropped. Everyone phoned me. The Volvo estate, an automatic of course, had this massive telephone system fitted between the front seats, a serious looking pair of antenna fitted at the rear of the machine.

This Racal/Vodafone system devoured the Volvo. After a year, the drivers door literally rusted through and the rest of the cars body was similarly eviscerated with rust. It was, quite literally, too dangerous to put the vehicle through one of our petrol station car washes. Eventually, an electrician provided the answer, due to the telephone system, the vehicle should have been fitted with sacrificial anodes to corrode, rather than the car body. Me, still a moron, didn’t care as my next car was an Audi Quattro coupe, along with a massive Motorola phone which sat quite neatly in the middle of the Audi.

Needless to say, a fascination with mobile communications was to continue until around 15 years ago, the penny finally dropping. Mobile phones had been invented to screw up my life and I wasn’t happy being available 24 hours a day. Wife and daughter were initially horrified, when I’d sit down at home and turn on the Nokia, deciding which missed calls I’d respond to and which text messages needed an answer. While my current weapon is a fairly large and up to date Samsung, it is used to listen to audio books or play Sudoku. It comes off “Flight Mode” when I can be bothered and not a second before. Both wife and daughter have adopted a similar attitude to their personal phones, taking control of their own lives again. This harsh behaviour sometimes is regarded as a problem. Sliding my phone off Flight Mode the other day revealed 5 missed calls from my brother. And not a single voice message. I called him back, he had been diagnosed with ‘Motor Neuron Disease’ (a real baddy of an illness with an 18 month sell by date) and wanted to talk. It’s questionable whether anything would have changed if the call had been answered 3 hours previously but perhaps his hysterics could have been assuaged. Needless to say, with my own Leukaemia diagnosis back in 2012, he was my first call – on his landline. Had he not answered, I would have called my wife but unfortunately, she was driving up from Manchester, so not the ideal news to convey to someone driving.

But importantly, Vodafone have now joined the space age, a letter of intent to explore a joint bid for Direct to Device satellite services. Hopefully this sort of initiative comes to fruition as we’d finally leave the local frustration here in Argyll. where we can see the 5G mast on the crest of a hill but only receive a signal when outdoors. And even then, it can be dodgy as there’s a blank 200 yards of coverage when walking the local salmon river. While I’m not the only dog walker who values this sanctuary from mobile phones, it’s still a bit weird as the 5G mast is visible, despite the phone giving its familiar “No Signal” message on the home screen.

As an aside, there’s been three blokes doing proper fly-fishing for salmon for over a week and on Monday, one of their number caught one. And chose to release it as he preferred rainbow trout! His body shall doubtless be discovered in the days ahead as the other two guys were not happy, denied the “proof” photograph which would have justified their holiday in hell (aka Argyll).. My consolation of there being no photographic evidence of me and my hand caught 10 pound salmon didn’t help, other than to inform them they were fishing the wrong river and should be almost 300 miles further north.

Has Vodafone done anything exciting from the markets perspective?

Maybe, is the useless answer.

Their share price has broken through the Blue downtrend, crucially not closing a session below 112p. This is a fairly big deal, confirming the Volvo killers share price remains in a zone where some proper future acceleration has become logical.

Currently, above 126p calculates with the potential of triggering gains to an initial 132p with our secondary, if bettered, at 140p. We may also cough politely, mentioning a future 200p is exerting a greater attraction than that Ecuadorian Priest who was killed by a falling cross during a Live Broadcast.. Perhaps other religious folk shall avoid pontificating on “spontaneity of death” in future, the theme of the blokes sermon! In fairness, it was a really big cross.

But if Vodafone closes a session below 112p, do they face a religious symbol dropping on their share price?

We are not entirely sure, due to the price behaviour since breaking the Blue downtrend. Apparently, below 115p should trigger reversal oan initial 108p with our secondary, if broken, working out at 100p and ideally, a Puka bounce.

For now, we think Vodafone is mucking around but we suspect it intends head upward.

We exist in interesting times.
